JSW Infrastructure Ltd. is set to secure the rights for the integrated development of two new outer container terminals and five existing berths at the Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD) within the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata. The project involves an investment of approximately ₹832.25 crore and marks another significant step in the company’s expansion within India’s port and logistics sector.
The company emerged as the highest bidder by quoting a royalty of ₹3,701 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), positioning itself to undertake one of the key container infrastructure projects on India’s eastern coast.
Expanding Container Handling Capacity
The project includes the construction of two new outer container handling berths along with the operation and modernization of five existing berths at Netaji Subhas Dock. Once completed, the facility will have the capacity to handle approximately 930,230 TEUs annually, in addition to accommodating multipurpose cargo.
The expansion is expected to enhance cargo handling efficiency, increase container throughput, and strengthen the port’s ability to support growing trade volumes in eastern and northeastern India.
Strengthening Presence at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port
This will be JSW Infrastructure’s second major project at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port. In 2025, the company secured a project for the reconstruction of Berth No. 8 and the mechanization of Berths 7 and 8 at Netaji Subhas Dock.
That project involved the installation of advanced Rail Mounted Quay Cranes (RMQCs) to improve container handling operations and increase productivity. The investment for the earlier project was also valued at approximately ₹832 crore, demonstrating the company’s long-term commitment to strengthening port infrastructure in Kolkata.
Boosting Eastern India's Maritime Logistics
The latest development is expected to support the modernization of the Kolkata Dock System and improve maritime connectivity across eastern India. Enhanced container handling capabilities will facilitate smoother cargo movement, reduce turnaround times, and improve logistics efficiency for exporters and importers using the port.
The project also aligns with India’s broader objective of upgrading port infrastructure and increasing capacity to support growing international trade and supply chain requirements.
