India’s online retail industry is on track for one of its strongest growth years, with the market expected to surpass Rs. 8.41 lakh crore (US$ 90 billion) in 2026. Increasing consumer demand for everyday products, expanding digital adoption and the rapid growth of online grocery shopping are reshaping the country’s e-commerce landscape.
According to Redseer Strategy Consultants, India’s online retail market recorded approximately Rs. 3.55 lakh crore (US$ 38 billion) in gross merchandise value (GMV) during the first half of 2026, representing around 25% year-on-year growth. This marks the strongest first-half performance in four years.
Redseer forecasts annual growth of 22-24%, potentially making 2026 the fastest-growing year for India’s online retail market in five years.
Grocery Emerges as a Major Driver of India’s E-commerce Growth
One of the most significant developments is the changing composition of India’s online retail market. Consumers are increasingly purchasing everyday essentials, personal care products and household goods through digital platforms.
Grocery has emerged as a particularly strong performer, recording growth of 53% and 51% across the last two half-year periods. Its share of online retail GMV is expected to increase from approximately 16% to 19%, positioning grocery to overtake mobile phones as the second-largest online retail category.
Grocery, beauty and personal care (BPC), and home and furniture together account for approximately 40% of online retail GMV in 2026. These categories are also expected to contribute around 60% of the incremental GMV added during the year.
Mobile Retail Growth Slows as Other Categories Gain Momentum
While India’s overall online retail market continues to expand, mobile phone sales are experiencing comparatively slower growth.
The mobile category remained largely flat during the first half of 2026 and is projected to grow by only 2-3% for the full year.
Meanwhile, electronics recorded a recovery, growing approximately 22%, supported partly by the Goods and Services Tax (GST) reduction on large appliances. However, this growth is expected to moderate to 12-15% during the second half of the year.
The changing growth pattern indicates that India’s e-commerce expansion is increasingly supported by recurring consumer purchases rather than relying predominantly on high-value electronics and mobile devices.
India’s 2026 Festive Season Online Sales Projected to Reach US$ 16 Billion
The upcoming festive shopping season is expected to provide another major boost to India’s digital retail industry.
Redseer estimates that festive-season online retail GMV could reach Rs. 1.40-1.49 lakh crore (US$ 15-16 billion), representing approximately 25% growth and the strongest festive-season performance in around five years.
The growth is expected to be led by everyday consumption and lifestyle categories.

What Redseer Says About India’s Changing Online Retail Market
Kushal Bhatnagar, Partner at Redseer Strategy Consultants, highlighted that India’s online retail market is experiencing its strongest growth in categories supported by consistent consumer demand.
The trend suggests a structural shift in digital shopping behaviour, with everyday consumption categories becoming increasingly important to the expansion of India’s e-commerce industry.
As grocery, personal care and home-related purchases gain traction, retailers and e-commerce platforms will need to strengthen their fulfilment capabilities, inventory management and last-mile delivery networks to meet growing consumer expectations.
